Combining representative sampling + other categories

Hello,

Is there a way I could have the Audience for a survey I am running as:

  • Age 18 to a 100
  • UK based
  • I have experienced some of the COVID-19 symptoms, but I believe it was another illness/physical ailment/chronic condition
  • I have not experienced any symptoms of COVID-19
  • Languages – fluent in English
    All the above are available in the ‘prescreen participants’ section.

It seems that in prolific I cannot choose both ‘prescreen participants’ & ‘representative sample’, which is what I want.

Let me know if there is a way to work around this!

Welcome to the community :slightly_smiling_face:

I guess that the limitation on pre-screening questions plus representative sample is due to the fact that there may not be the participants in each demographic (gender, age, race) if pre-screening questions are applied. However, your first two and last pre-screening questions are, I think, a given or implied in a representative sample and the other two (presumably with an OR logic) are common and will not limit the subject pool too much. If you are aiming for this possibility then I think you need to ask support.

Alternatively you could use the duplicate study function (one click) to create lots of duplicate studies, and modify the sex/decade of age combination, and perhaps ignore race, to create your own representative sample.

Re frist part: I have asked support to see what they say on that
Re duplicate function: So I would have different studies that would target different populations you mean? In that sense all I would be using is ‘prescreen participants’ and select all the variables I want. I am wondering how to best calculate that with needing a sample of 1120 people

Yes :slightly_smiling_face: You could use the duplicate feature to create surveys to target different populations. Especially now in these days of TikTok virality, it is probably a good idea to create two surveys with the same number of places with screeners for males and for females separately as recommended in the demographic balancing FAQ.

You can then also separate your study again into age groups, or age group and ethnicity. You could use the data here

to see how many people should be in each age group, or even age group and ethnicity.

But I hope support says yes, especially because representative samples are currently free.
